The throat models use a 13-by-13-inch or 16-by-16-inch cast plate with a 5/16-inch pivot pin; the top-sealing units mount at the flue termination with a stainless cable running down the flue wall to a handle assembly.

To identify yours, look for the stamped Gelco logo on the plate edge or the rectangular tag on the frame rail. If the tag is gone, measure the throat opening width and depth, and note whether the handle is a rotary knob (throat type) or a spring-loaded cable pull (top-sealing). • Smoke rolls into the room on start-up. The warped plate no longer seats flat against the frame, leaving a gap that lets combustion gases bypass the flue. We measure this with a smoke pencil during our Level 2 inspection; any visible leakage means the plate has lost its seal.
• Cold air pours down the chimney even when “closed.” The plate is stuck partially open from corrosion at the pivot, or the cable has slipped in a top-sealing unit. In Hoffman Estates, this costs you roughly $200-$400 per heating season in lost conditioned air.
• The handle moves freely but the plate doesn’t. The pivot pin has sheared inside the bracket, or the linkage has detached. The handle feels normal because it’s no longer connected to anything below.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check you can do yourself: with the fireplace cold, shine a flashlight up the flue and look for daylight around the plate edge, or visible cracks in the cast surface. If you see either, the damper is compromised.

Everything past that point involves working inside the flue throat or at the chimney top, often on a ladder, with parts that are heavy, sharp, and positioned where a dropped plate can damage the firebox or liner. We do not recommend DIY replacement. The pivot pin brackets are riveted to the frame in most Gelco units, requiring drilling and re-riveting that disturbs the smoke chamber refractory.
