You can safely check three things from the firebox: whether the chain moves the plate at all, whether rust debris is collecting, and whether the plate sits level when closed. Use a flashlight, not your hand, to look up past the smoke chamber. Never reach up into the throat. The plate can slip, and a 12-pound cast-iron damper falling on a wrist or face causes the kind of injury that doesn’t heal clean.

Everything else, pivot pin to frame reset, happens above the smoke chamber with the flue open. We use a chimney camera to inspect the full throat before we quote, because what looks like a plate problem from below is often frame rot from above.
